Regulating Qi w/ Herbal Qi—Essentials of TCM Herbal Treatment Theory

How can we know the variations of body conditions better and more precisely? Once you realize the essence of life through deeper self-contemplation and cultivation, then transformation of both physical and spiritual life will occur. This leads to deeper awareness of the core problems of peoples’ conditions.

The practice of deeper contemplation, cultivation and transformation of life requires steady practice to bring about wholehearted improvement and mindfulness. Yet, isn’t it always the case that we allow ourselves to be forgetful and let our minds wander? When this happens, be aware of this, and, as you become focused again, stay mindful and relaxed.

Here are some thoughts on the application of TCM in relation to the practice of deeper contemplation, cultivation and transformation of life:

The traditional Taoist theory considers herbs to be “the Essence of the Mother Earth” (Di Yuan Dan), which, when taken, can help you with life-cultivating practice.

TCM theory and practice utilizes a particular therapeutic herbal Qi to treat the imbalanced body Qi, which are differentiated into Yin-Yang, Biao-Li, Cold-Hot and Deficiency-Excess conditions.

According to the Yellow Emperor's Canon: “The upwards, downwards, inwards and outwards movements of Qi exist in every organism.” Therefore, when one is in a disease condition, TCM medicine uses the herbal Qi to harmonize and balance the movement of body Qi back to the normal directional momentums.

That Qi follows the thought (or idea) means every thought is also energized with Qi, so that regulating Qi has the effect of soothing the mind and spirit and creating a more contemplative state. Therefore, not only can physical body disorders and conditions be treated by the Qi-regulating methods, but also mental and emotional ones (spiritually and psychologically related).

Therapeutic Qi of the herb is determined by where the herb is planted (space and place), when it is planted and harvested (time and climate), and what forms or shapes and colors it has. These are decisive factors in determining the clinical effects (pharmaceutical effects, so to speak) of the four healing Qi's and five therapeutic tastes of any single herb. Upon the understanding of the above, TCM treats body conditions and disorders with the desired effects from herbal formulas that regulate and vivify the Qi movements to their normal status.

The most important task in prescribing an herbal medicine formula is to harmonize and regulate the Qi so one can heal both the physical conditions and mental/spiritual disorders. This is the most essential and classical rule to adhere to for anyone who practices TCM.

Undoubtedly, all of what I have said is very fundamental philosophical thinking compared to those of the great TCM Masters have achieved. But this is what I have learned, gained and developed from cumulative TCM study and clinical practice, and I have found that it requires further testing, verifying and modifying as time goes on.
