My Wish: to expand TCM level
I spent almost seven years of studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) at Chengdu University of TCM, Chengdu/Sichuan, China, and received the Master of Science of TCM Medicine degree in July, 2001. I returned to Taiwan in the same year. One of my main interests in the application of TCM is to treat human immune deficiency diseases (e.g., viral infections, cancers, and auto-immune diseases, etc.). Finding that there is less of a chance to get the information on these subjects in Taiwan, I decided to go to San Francisco, California at the end of 2002 to search for more research and application opportunities. I was hired as a "clinical & research associate" at the IEP (Immune Enhancement Project) clinic, http://www.iepclinic.com/ . IEP offers TCM acupuncture, herbal, massage and nutritional counseling for people with HIV/AIDS, with the help from the federal Ryan White Fund, San Francisco government funds and private donations. During those almost four years until I returned to Taiwan again in March 2006, I received a great deal invaluable training and attended many workshops focusing on the specific needs of a variety of people, including those suffering from cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other auto-immune illnesses. I have gained an updated knowledge, in addition to that from my own TCM profession, about HIV/AIDS in particular, and how it affects the mental and physical conditions of those afflicted.
In Western medicine there are currently four strategies for treating HIV/AIDS. Among the present drug therapies for HIV infections and AIDS one strategy blocks the entry of the virus to the host T-cell (stops fusion). The second stops replication of the host cell's DNA. The third strategy blocks the replicated virus from "cutting" into RNA particles. The fourth strategy stops the replicated RNA virus from "budding out” of the infected T-cells. The pills for the treatment which are mega-loads and are difficult for the patient to swallow result in a lot of health maintenance problems. In addition, the side-effects from these pills generate fear and reluctance from the patient to continue the treatment. Furthermore, stress, anxiety and other issues related to coping with life with HIV, such as relationships and social environment, influence and test the endurance and love of every patient, as well as their family and friends. Dealing with such multi-factor (mental, physical and social) conditions is why TCM treatments are more beneficial to the patient than Western medicine. Along with the HIV-drug management, using TCM medicine that is tailored for every single client with treatment principles and plans, not only reduces the side-effects of vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, loss of appetite, insomnia, stress and low energy, but also can improve the overall quality of life for the patient.
